Beaches and lakes are set to reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend in New York, Delaware, New Jersey and Connecticut.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement on Friday. He confirmed that beaches can have no more than 50 percent capacity and concessions will still be closed.
He also noted group contact activities will not be allowed and social distancing efforts will be enforced. According to the governor, the states coordinated together to avoid people flocking to already reopened beaches.
“We are one multi-state region. What one state does will affect other states. (If) one state doesn’t open beaches (and) another state does, you will see people flood to that state.”
– Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York
Local governments will decide whether to open municipal beaches. If they do, they will also be required to adhere to the states’ rules.
