The House Subcommittee on Military Personnel recently held a hearing to discuss sexual harassment within the Department of Defense. Wednesday’s hearing was held to examine the military’s failings in dealing with sexual harassment and perceived retaliation.

The proceedings come amid national outcry over the murder of Army specialist Vanessa Guillen, who was stationed at Fort Hood in Texas. Many service members have since shared their stories in solidarity.
Officials confirmed a new team has been sent to investigate the circumstances surrounding Guillen’s death further.
“We actually did send a team back this week,” stated Colonel Patrick Wempe. “In the last two days, they have been inspecting the 3CR unit because we weren’t able to inspect it when we were down there the first time in late June and early July.”
According to Subcommittee Chairwoman Jackie Speier, nearly a quarter of women on active duty reported being sexual harassed in 2018. She has suggested “the whole program needs to change.”
