2020 Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said Tuesday in a meandering press conference that his campaign will release their vice presidential pick by the end of next week.
“I’m gonna have a choice in the first week in August,” Biden said from a podium in front of reporters in Wilmington, Delaware. “I promise, I’ll let you know when I do.”
Biden’s announcement would come two weeks before the Democratic National Convention is slated to start on Aug. 17 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The convention will be conducted almost entirely online and feature only two hours of prime-time programming each night through the 20th. Biden will physically accept the nomination in Milwaukee.
When asked if Biden will be able to meet with his potential running mate ahead of the convention, Biden simply said, “We’ll see.”
Biden committed to picking a female running mate in March. Many speculate Biden will pick a non-white woman given the George Floyd riots, although Biden hasn’t pledged to do so.
Current top contenders include former United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice, California Sen. Kamala Harris, Florida Rep. Val Demmings, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujah, Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
During the press conference, Biden also appeared to forget where he was, reinforcing concerns his ability to command the nation’s highest office, while making the vice presidential selection all the more important. Read a full run-down of Biden’s best slip ups here.
THIS IS NOT A JOKING MATTER FOR JOE BIDEN.
“Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to the Kingswood community center. Actually, that’s the one down where I used to work. That’s a joke. I didn’t know where we were.” -Joe Biden.
He has a long history of not knowing where he is.
