Fla. high school sports to begin practices next week

High school sports in Florida are set to resume next week despite rising coronavirus infections in the state.
During a virtual emergency board meeting Monday, the Florida High School Athletic Association voted to maintain its July 27 practice start date for six fall sports, including football. The decision came after the board voted down three separate proposals to push the sports schedule back to August 10.
While some schools will not be conducting practices in the near term, one local high school football coach explained his team is looking forward to playing again.
“You know, they’re just ready to get back in full swing and have some kind of a season whether it be abbreviated, adjusted schedule, whatever the case is,” said Mike Montemayor, football coach at Atlantic Coast High School. “The kids just want to play, so I think they deserve that right.”

Schools that choose to delay their practices will be allowed to participate in the regular season, but not state playoffs.
