Helen Andrews is a senior editor at The American Conservative arguing against a “new normal” post-coronavirus. Andrews joins host Ben Domenech on this edition of The Federalist Radio Hour to explain her thesis.
Americans should insist on returning to the “old normal,” which Andrews categorizes as life before coronavirus restrictions were put in place. She does not believe Americans should settle for a “new normal,” which she believes will be ridden with intense nanny state policies and over-policing.
“Now that we’ve reached a point where people are talking about what the world’s going to look like after the lockdowns are lifted, I’ve been hearing a lot of people, especially politicians, say, it’s not going to be like switching on a light. We’re not going to be able to go back to the ‘old normal’ right away. We’re going to be caught for some indefinite, interim period in this twilight zone of what they call the ‘new normal,’” Andrews said.
Andrews believes we need to re-think how we view restrictions that are currently in place as well.
“I just don’t think that’s right. I think we’re abandoning the lockdowns because the facts on which the arguments for the lockdowns were based have changed. Which means that we need to start over from the beginning when it comes to justifying which restrictions we need in place and which ones we don’t,” Andrews said.
