The New York Attorney General’s Office is investigating sexual assault claims made by employees of NBC News. On Tuesday, reports of the investigation circulated after news broke that NBC announced their news division’s chairman, Andrew Lack, is expediting his retirement following backlash over his handling of these claims.

The civil division of the New York Attorney General’s Office is spearheading the investigation and is looking into the culture of the network, namely their alleged history of sexual assault, retaliation and gender discrimination.

“People in the workplace who are powerful, who are abusing that power, and women and men are suffering,” said former anchor NBC Ann Curry. “I think that the fact that people are speaking out is important and the fact that we are moving against this imbalance of power is absolutely overdue.”

Former NBC anchor Linda Vester reportedly said the Attorney General’s Office launched the investigation mid-November with investigators already interviewing at least a dozen former and current employees. Former “Today” host Megan Kelly along with ex-employees of ousted hosts Matt Lauer and Chris Matthews have allegedly been contacted for testimony.

Some of the people who shared their cooperation to the investigation have alleged the network knew about the inappropriate conduct for years, which resulted in a toxic work environment.

“What would be really helpful is that those women, the high profile women especially, would collectively use their voices to call on NBC Universal to hire outside council to really get to the bottom of this,” said Vester.

Meanwhile, the network announced Telemundo chairman Cesar Conde will head the newly formed NBC Universal News Group, which will have all news branches of the network reporting to him.

The investigation is believed to have taken a pause due to the Attorney General’s Office being closed during the coronavirus pandemic and is still pending.
