House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is pushing for voting by proxy for lawmakers on Capitol Hill. On Sunday, Pelosi said she’s all for it and noted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) will consider it.
A proxy vote would mean one person may vote on behalf of another amid the public health crisis and social distancing orders.
According to Pelosi, even if Congress moves forward with remote or proxy voting, certain circumstances would still require lawmakers to show up.
“Our process was to strive to make it bipartisan,” stated the House speaker. “Of course, some of the members are frustrated because our physical presence isn’t here to have a classified briefing, that presence would be necessary.”
Some Republican lawmakers have argued against handing over too much power to one single person or party, regardless of the current circumstances.
This came after McCarthy claimed Pelosi owes America an apology for holding up the latest coronavirus relief bill. On Saturday, the House Minority Leader claimed she held up past bills so the Democrat Congressional Committee could attack Republicans and secure more funding for the arts.
McCarthy also accused the top House Democrat of trying to “politicize the pandemic.”
He has said Pelosi was more interested in investigations, impeachment and ice cream instead of focusing on what Congress needed to accomplish. It remains unclear whether proxy voting will be implemented on Capitol Hill.
